Friday 3 May is the 20th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day – is it a cause for celebration? Freedom to speak is central to the Public Service Values that are core to CBA’s work. Yet every day at the secretariat we hear of journalists who have lost their lives for the work they do.
The media organisations that are our members understand that with freedom comes responsibility – journalism must be accurate and ethical, but if we do not defend the right to freedom of speech then in another 20 years, I fear the world will be a very different place where many of our other freedoms have also been eroded.
